Alcaidesa Marina celebrates a new edition of the environmental education at Alcaidesa Marina activity called “Conoce tu puerto” (Know Your Port), a strategic initiative that will take place on April 14, 15, and 16. During these three consecutive days, our marina’s modern facilities will be transformed into a dynamic space for learning, coexistence, and respect for nature for a total of 370 participants. This program reinforces the port’s firm commitment to the pillars of sustainability, education, and effective social integration in the municipality of La Línea de la Concepción.

This meeting, fully consolidated in the marina’s annual calendar since its inception, helps to promote environmental education at Alcaidesa Marina and is successfully part of the Municipal Educational Offer of the City Council of La Línea. Through this institutional collaboration program, primary school students, adults with disabilities, and groups at risk of social exclusion discover firsthand the importance of the nearby marine ecosystem. Furthermore, the activity provides insight into the technical, logistical, and administrative operations of a world-class port infrastructure that serves as an economic and social driver for the entire Campo de Gibraltar region.

“Conoce tu puerto”: Environmental education at Alcaidesa Marina for new generations

Alcaidesa Marina’s activity was born from the firm conviction that training new generations is the most powerful tool for defending the environment and preserving the marine surroundings in the long term. The main objective is to raise environmental awareness and strengthen the bond between society and the ecosystem that surrounds us. At the same time, the program seeks to promote knowledge of nautical sports, maritime professions, and the daily maintenance, safety, and management work carried out by the Alcaidesa Marina team to maintain international excellence.

During the guided tours led by professionals, attendees will discover the most relevant marine species in our immediate environment. This pedagogical experience allows them to value the immense biodiversity hidden beneath the waters of the Strait of Gibraltar, a site that is part of the UNESCO Intercontinental Biosphere Reserve of the Mediterranean. We are talking about a unique geographical location in the world due to its ecological value, complex marine currents, and its critical role as a migratory corridor for numerous species of cetaceans and seabirds.

Environmental Challenges: Waste Management and the Plastic Crisis

The day will interactively address today’s major global environmental challenges. The educational content focuses on two fundamental pillars that guarantee the health of our seas, the purity of our waters, and the future of the so-called “Blue Economy” in Andalusia:

  • The importance of proper waste management: Emphasis is placed on individual responsibility within port areas. Poor waste disposal practices can lead to direct and lethal pollution for local wildlife, as well as the sanitary degradation of our beaches and pontoons.
  • The crisis of the microplastic crisis in the ocean: This invisible but devastating global problem will be analyzed. Instructors will explain in detail how these fragments directly affect the marine food chain and, by extension, human health by integrating into the global food consumption cycle.

A Natural Laboratory on the Pontoons of Alcaidesa Marina

Theoretical training will give way to direct observation through a guided tour of the port area. Instructors will help participants identify “in situ” the species inhabiting the port’s walls and waters. In this way, the pontoons become a true open-air natural laboratory where science and biology become tangible for all audiences, reinforcing the value of environmental education at Alcaidesa Marina and awakening scientific vocations among the youth.

As a novelty for this 2026 edition, Alcaidesa Marina has prepared a new surprise activity for attendees during their walk along the pontoons. This dynamic has been specifically designed to enrich the sensory experience and knowledge of the marine environment in a playful way. This final surprise will allow for a deeper emotional connection with the local nautical environment, helping children and adults become true active guardians of the sea in their daily lives.

Nautical Tradition: Marine Knots Workshop and Teamwork

As a final touch, visitors will participate in a practical marine knots workshop. This activity aims to teach the traditional arts of navigation and seamanship, an ancient discipline that has defined the identity of La Línea de la Concepción. At the same time, the workshop strengthens essential values such as teamwork, concentration, and patience, consolidating this journey of environmental education at Alcaidesa Marina in a relaxed environment of shared learning.
