In recent summers, occasional interactions have been reported between Iberian orcas (Orcinus orca) and recreational vessels in the Strait of Gibraltar and the Gulf of Cadiz. This small population — fewer than 50 individuals — is protected and listed as vulnerable under the Spanish Catalogue of Endangered Species.
Experts believe that these interactions are mainly due to natural behaviours such as curiosity, play, or social bonding, and do not represent an inherent threat. However, at Alcaidesa Marina, we want to help ensure safe and informed sailing by sharing the official guidelines issued by Spain’s Ministry for the Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (MITECO).
What to do in the event of a sighting or interaction?
Do not stop the boat. Head towards shallower waters or the coastline.
Do not use deterrents or approach the animals deliberately.
Report the sighting to the nearest Marine Rescue Coordination Centre via VHF (channel 16 or working channel), regardless of damage.
If safe to do so, take photos and email them to: orcas@sasemar.es.

Thank you for sailing responsibly.
