As part of its commitment to sustainability, environmental protection, and the conservation of the natural heritage of the Campo de Gibraltar, Alcaidesa Marina continues to reinforce its collaboration with ECOLOCALIZA, an organization specialized in marine research, conservation, and environmental education based in La Línea de la Concepción. This initiative, published last May 12th, aims to raise awareness among sailors, visitors, and sea lovers about the importance of responsible cetacean watching in the Strait of Gibraltar and to disseminate the good practices that allow the protection of the species that inhabit or migrate through these waters.

The sea constitutes one of the greatest natural values of our environment. Each day of sailing offers the opportunity to contemplate some of the most emblematic marine species of the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. However, this privilege also implies a responsibility: to ensure that our presence in the marine environment does not alter the animals’ behavior or compromise the conservation of an ecosystem considered one of the most important in Europe.

The Strait of Gibraltar: a unique enclave for marine biodiversity

The Strait of Gibraltar is internationally recognized as one of the most relevant marine corridors on the European continent. Its strategic location between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea favors a constant exchange of water, nutrients, and species, creating an environment of extraordinary biological richness.

During most of the year, these waters host a great diversity of marine fauna. It is possible to observe fin whales, several species of dolphins, sea turtles, and even other large cetaceans that use this natural corridor during their migratory journeys. This richness makes the Strait a privileged destination for recreational sailing, nature tourism, and scientific research.

Nigtherless, the increase in nautical activity makes it essential to remember the importance of respecting the current regulations on cetacean watching. Maintaining an appropriate distance, avoiding sudden changes in course or speed, and reducing the noise generated by vessels are simple actions that decisively contribute to minimizing the impact on these animals.

The Whale Project: an initiative where every observation counts

As part of this collaboration, Alcaidesa Marina wishes to give visibility to the Whale Project, an initiative driven by ECOLOCALIZA whose purpose is to collect scientific information about cetaceans and other marine species present in the Strait of Gibraltar.

The project invites all sailors to become active collaborators in marine research. Each sighting made during a voyage can provide highly valuable information to better understand the distribution, migratory movements, and behavior of these species.

Participants only need to record basic data such as the approximate location of the sighting, date, time, the observed species, and the estimated number of specimens. Subsequently, this information is analyzed by ECOLOCALIZA’s scientific team, expanding our knowledge of the Strait’s biodiversity and improving conservation strategies.

Citizen science has become an indispensable tool for ocean protection. Thanks to the collaboration of sailors, fishermen, and sea users, it is possible to gather an amount of information that would be impossible to obtain solely through traditional scientific campaigns.
