The Office and its role in port sustainability
The APBA’s Green Office is the technical unit responsible for promoting sustainability in the ports of Algeciras and Tarifa. Its main function is to coordinate and supervise the Green Strategy, promoting energy efficiency, the use of renewable energies, and the reduction of the carbon footprint within the port environment.
In addition, it works on the identification of new sustainable projects, advising companies, and certifying good environmental practices, contributing to aligning port activity with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Its role is key to establishing a common roadmap among the different entities operating in the port.
Environmental sustainability: integrated management
During the reunion anual oficina verde APBA, Alcaidesa Marina presented the main initiatives it carries out in the environmental field, with an approach based on prevention, efficiency, and continuous improvement:
- Installation of solar panels on the roofs of the shipyard buildings.
- Reduction of the carbon footprint, having achieved a significant decrease since 2017.
- Efficient waste management, including the correct separation and treatment of hazardous waste.
- Use of treated wastewater for irrigation and cleaning.
- Biodiversity protection actions and improvement of water and air quality.
- Environmental awareness activities such as “Conoce tu puerto” (Know your port) and programs with Ecolocaliza.
These measures minimize the impact of port activity on the natural environment and reinforce the protection of the Strait of Gibraltar ecosystem, an enclave of high environmental value.
Social commitment and integration with the environment
In the social sphere, Alcaidesa Marina continues to develop initiatives aimed at strengthening its relationship with the local community and improving the quality of life in the port environment:
- Integration of 8,787 m² of green spaces in the new commercial area.
- Support for social initiatives such as the “Carrera de la Mujer” (Women’s Race).
- Sponsorship of sports and cultural activities, such as regattas and nautical events.
- Participation in cultural initiatives with Qsostenible Events certification.
Governance, innovation, and responsible management model
Sustainability at Alcaidesa Marina is also supported by management based on transparency, innovation, and continuous improvement:
- Certification under international standards aligned with the SDGs.
- Incorporation of sustainability criteria in procurement processes.
- Implementation of telemetry systems on pontoons to optimize consumption.
- Commitment to technological innovation to improve efficiency.
The application of technology allows for real-time consumption monitoring, preventive incident detection, and resource optimization, resulting in a continuous improvement of operational performance.
A consolidated commitment to the Green Strategy
Participation in this reunion anual oficina verde APBA highlights Alcaidesa Marina’s commitment to sustainability and its alignment with the APBA’s Green Strategy. As a marina integrated into the Algeciras Bay Port environment, its activity is developed under criteria of efficiency, territorial integration, and responsible environmental management.
In an environment like the Strait of Gibraltar, with its high ecological value and intense maritime activity, this commitment responds not only to environmental responsibility but also to a strategic vision aimed at the future of the port sector.
